Spoofhounds motivated to return to the top in 2019

Area teams took another step toward the first game of the 2019-20 season.

Monday marked the first day of practice for Missouri high schools.

For the Maryville football team, that means work begins toward another state title. The Spoofhounds fell one game short a year ago with a loss in the state semifinals to Trinity Catholic.

The 'Hounds won 12 games a season ago and have reached the state title game in two of the last three years, but they aren't satisfied. Head coach Matt Webb said that despite the success his team has seen in recent years, this senior class is still looking for more.

"These kids are hungry. They're hungry to compete with what the senior class did the year before them. Speaking for this year, though, those guys are really hungry to get back. We lost in the semifinals last year. They have a hunger and desire to compete and be better than the year before them, and it's competition. Those kids compete year-round. So I think the competition just amongst themselves and that hunger and that desire is one of the keys."

The Spoofhounds open the season August 30 against Blair Oaks on the William Jewell campus in Liberty.
